A while ago I read an article on Advocate Magazine from 2003 that had a Iraq veteran that was done with his duties and was fighting to abolish the 'don't ask don't tell policy.' Representative Marty Meehan and Soldier Eric Alva are now leading the battle. They basically wante gay and lesbian people to be open in the armed forces. I think it is very ideal goal and will take a lot of convincing and fighting. And now yet another homophobic news came along, General Peter Pace calls homosexuality immoral which may squash any hopes of open gay and lesbian soldiers. Gay and Lesbian people have been in the army for years, World War II inadvertently was responsible for so many to be together and in a way globalize. There are claims that the amount of dishonorably discharging gay and lesbian soldiers lowers during war time. The army denies this but there is a hard-to-find document saying not to discharge as much at war time.
I think the reason people want to be open in army is because 'who cares?' really. People just have to live with it. It is so fustrating to keep secrets. Sexual orientation shouldn't define us. And gay bashing is so insulting and there is so much anti-feminie gender problems in the army it can brust.
