Reaper moves back to Tuesday

To those who aren't keeping up, the CW's "Reaper" moved from Tuesdays to Thursdays, when all the post-strike shows came back. I hate that they moved to Thursdays, because I miss episodes. I am always out on Thursdays and only able to record Lost and rather not watch the encores. April 22, the show will thankfully moving back to Tuesday. Since there was no new Lost this week, I was able to catch up with a new episode tonight. Unfortunately the show is up in the air at the CW, if it will be renewed or canceled is still not known. What I have missed so far is Sam (Bret Harrison)'s relationship with a girl Cady (Jessica Stroup) who may or may not the Devil (Ray Wise)'s daughter. And Sam, Sock and Ben move into a complex and bond with their neighbors a gay couple Steve (Michael Ian Black) and Tony (Ken Marino). They stop being friends with them, not because they are gay but because they are demons. They take great offense when Sam tells them the truth, they said they rather wanted homophobia. What is great they will be repeating new eps next week. Steve is a flying demon, he saves Sam against a lost soul.

Reaper Episode 2 Review

"Charged" - October 2, 2007
I didn't review the first episode of "Reaper," because lots of people did. Second episodes of new shows are always interesting for me. Sometimes they are 'fillers,' that are sometimes meaningless, just meant to fill in time. Some continue the story of the first. I feel they are completely different from the pilot. Unique and sometimes, not similar to the rest of the season. Most second episodes are written by other writers and never write other episodes.

The cast gels, Brett Harrison is awesome as Sam, endearing and cute. His sidekick Sock (Tyler Labine), like Entertainment Weekly says, you actually want to hang out with him. Tyler has played sidekicks a lot and in other 3 shows. Andi (Missy Peregrym), the love interest is actually likable as well. You can understand why Sam likes her. She is fun. One complaint: Ben (Ricky Gonzalez) is Hispanic and almost a 'red shirt'. For those that don't know, that is a Star Trek reference. Almost everyone with red shirts got killed. He got hurt and seriously burned in the first episode. Then in this episode, Sam says that 'somebody' ended up in the hospital. Ben's name was not even mentioned, in terms of him being the one that ended up in the hospital. Ben gets hurt once again in this episode---and still is on Sam's side and wants to continue fighting. Everyone has talked about Ray Wise as the Devil, the role is delightful. I was afraid he was going to be annoying but so far none are.

The series is like any superhero/sci-fi/fantasy show but much funnier and with a complicated plot made simple. To save his life, Sam's dad soul his first born's soul, thinking he wouldn't even have kids because the doctor told him so. What he didn't know was that the doctor was paid to lie to them by the Devil. So then Sam was born and when he became 21, he would be the Devil's bounty hunter for the rest of his life. The Devil threatens Sam's mom's life to do the job. So Sam lies to his mom telling him he is not working for the Devil anymore. What is cool is that Sam's friends Sock and Ben and his father know about his 'secret identity.' Interestingly enough, the Devil is not the one encouraging Sam to lie to his mother, it is his father--with a new car. Said car is then turned against him.

So for the second episode, Sam is not sure about his destiny. He avoids doing his bounty hunter job. The Devil convinces him like a father that sees potential in their son and encourages him with tough live. Cool things that remind me a bit of Beetlejuice, Sam gets transports (Vessel) for his prisoners in a creepy box that follows him. Also, when he finally has his prisoner trapped, he takes him to 'hell on Earth.' Like in the first episode, he went to the DMV, that reminded me of afterlife office Beetlejuice went to. Each Vessel is designed especially after each target, supposedly--their 'fighting' outfits change with each foe as well. The first one is a dirt devil, the second is a remote control car. Basically, regular stuff. In this second episode, the foe ('The Soul') is barely seen until halfway through the episode, which is interesting.

This Fall's Prime Time Sci-Fi Shows

I am glad network TV is embracing Sci-fi dramas. When "Lost" came out, there were a lot of serial-like copies and only "Heroes" stuck. These seem to be just 1-episode threads.

Bionic Woman NBC
The much hyped about Bionic Woman. I think it might be a hit, it is produced by those who renewed "Battlestar Galacta"--which is not canceled, the team just wants to call it quits. What I like about this is that when Jaime discovers she has been turned into a cyborg, she feels violated.

Journeyman NBC
NBC is releasing three sci-fi shows, probably because the success of "Heroes." this one is about a newspaper reporter who can leap into the past. Kevin McKidd looks like Anthony Michael Hall a bit. It might be a sleeper hit or fade away.

Chuck NBC
Chuck sounds like the short-lived UPN series "Jake 2.0." It is about a computer whiz geek who gets spy secrets downloaded into his brain and becomes an operative. If Jake failed to capture the mainstream, I doubt this will either unless it is captivating.

Pushing Daisies ABC
This has a complicated promise: A pie maker and part-time detective (aren't they all?) can revive the dead with a touch but a second touch kills. They seem to promoting it a lot, maybe it will be good. This seems interesting, i'll check it out.

Moonlight CBS
A vampire series about another good-guy vampire private eye (last were "Angel" and "Forever Knight). This comes from Angel co-producer David Greenwalt. Since Greenwalt is behind this one, I don't doubt it will be well-written but who knows if it will be successful. I am surprised CBS picked it up. It will star Alex O' Loughlin. I will definitely watch.

Reaper The CW
Cutie geek Bret Harrison stars as a 21-year old who his parents sell his soul to the devil and must serve as a grim reaper to capture hell's escapees. Strange and crooked premise but we'll see it really sticks. I'm going to watch.

The Sarah Connor Chronicles FOX
This is a mid-season replacement, but "Buffy" was one too, so that doesn't bode bad tidings to this show. I will be watching because of curiosity.

New Amsterdam FOX
This also has an interesting plot. A NYPD cop who has been immortal since saving a Native American woman's life 4oo years ago. His mission is to find love, touching. As Fox cancel their shows so quickly, I will watch it.
