Presenting Bouken Silver!

The latest Super Sentai series in Japan is Boukenger ("Adventure Ranger") and next year it will be Power Rangers Operation Overdrive here in the states and eventually a year later in Latin America, the U.K., etc. Power Rangers is now being filmed in New Zealand where it doesn't even air anymore because it was banned because of the violence. I rarely put Sentai stuff on this blog because thats bascially my life--my website.

But I thought this sixth ranger was pretty interesting because of the level of silver, it is like an aliminum silver and the blue is a shiny lavender-sort of color. It is interesting. There has been like two other silver rangers in Sentai history but they were pretty different shade and quality. Yes, I know the guy playing him is pretty andyronistic but they are all like that these days.

Sentai Vault 2: Jetman Parody

This is a parody of one of the best Super Sentai series, Jetman, it was the series before Zyuranger, which the original Power Rangers was based on. Jetman almost became the first season, Jetman was about a group of humans that were accidently sprayed with 'bird'-waves, superpowers based on birds made by the airforce. Beware lots of cursing and human-made sound effects. Oh yeah, I didn't make it.

Okay Okay not exactly American but didn't they all the Anglos originate from England? 27 year old Newcastle, England actor originated the role of Ethan Cambias on All My Children in 2004 and now started the role of E.J. River Phoenix

I don't know if to call this tribute or not, I am just writing. In 1993, when River Phoenix (born 1970) died of a drug (speedball) induced heart failure, my father gave me an article about his death. I used the article as a report at school. The teacher, I think was touched about my use of such a serious topic. I was 11 and felt he didn't do a wrong thing. Just a reality when abusing drugs, not that it was a 'lifestyle' to whirlwind but I did feel his life has cut short. I have seen a few of his movies and he was a talented actor. He was regarded a sex symbol which much like Brad Pitt he hated but more than Brad, he would go out of his way to not look like one.

He has been compared to James Dean, River started acting in 1985 and never completed the movie Dark Blood and his mother was sued because of loss of expenses which I find unjust. Since his death, many songs have been written either about him or in his honor and many books and movies have been dedicated to him. When I became 23, I didn't realize that was the age he was, he is actually an August baby just like me but I have already lived longer than him since I will be 24 in August. When I saw My Own Private Idaho, I can't help but cry. He was such a marvelous actor and beautiful man. Of course, I know if I knew him, my opinion might be different because we never know.

Watch My Own Private Idaho

I heard about this movie My Own Private Idaho (1990) for a while. Trotted as a gay movie starring the late great (can I say that?) River Phoenix and Keanu Reeves. I finally saw it and it is a great treasure. A bit disorienating, this artsy splice-together movie loosely based on Shakespeare's Henry IV part 1 directed and written by Gus Van Sant (Drugstore Cowboy, To Die For, Elephant). The movie even goes in and out from current lingo to Shakespearen in a shake of a hat. River Phoenix was great and is great in this movie, touching protrayal of narcoleptic hussler Mike from Idaho. It is a dark real world for Mike, his mother dumped him, he has no support, he lives selling his body for crummy bills and lives on the streets. And in high stress, he falls asleep for long periods looking like a living ragdoll.

Keanu plays Scott, the son of a mayor and also a hussler and everyone lives in awe of him. He is a good friend but also will inherit a lot of money. All the husslers and some females as well adore their mentor Bob, a loony bum. This movie thrusted River into gay icon status. Mike loves Scott but Scott doesn't exactly return it. Their friendship is put a test on a Journey to italy to find Mike's mother and Scott meets a beautiful girl, English pupil of Mike's mother. Mike looks up to Scott, someone he can't quite reach or feel close to, even though they are friends. We can all sympathize with that. While in many indie movies that study characters, the characters are quiet and you just stare at them and it is meant to be something but its nothing. But in this one, it means something. Now, would I consider this a 'gay movie'? Not really. A movie gay men would enjoy? Yes. A movie a movie lover would enjoy? Yes. River Phoenix died of a drug overdose in 1993, he was 23, my age right now until August, he was close friends with Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers and is in this movie as well and is really great. Belated Larry Bagby Sighting

I just saw Walk the Line and surprised to Larry Bagby from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, their gay bully friend from High School. He played Marshall Grant, one of Johnny Cash's bandmates. The director nicely promientally showed him even thought his part isn't that big. He even has his own band.
