Brave Miami Dolphin in Ace Venture: Pet Detective

Ace Venture: Pet Detective (1994) has always been a great comedy to me as it had the Miami Dolphins in it and most of it was filmed in Miami. I am of course from Miami. It also is one of the first movies I heard of the use of Transgenders. But the thing is that Transgenders are shown in a negative light. The villain is one. Anyway, there is a sequence that features Ace looking at the Dolphins, to check which player has a missing stone in a  ring to find the person who stole the pet dolphin.

So in the sequence he is in the bathroom in a stall next to a Miami Dolphin and then the player thinks he is looking at his penis. Jut when we think Ace will get beat up, the player ends up to be interested and chases after him, alluding that he was gay.

So I think that player was Jeff Uhlenhake. If indeed was an ACTUAL Miami Dolphin and not some actor, then that was EXTREMELY brave of him to do so because some people might think it would ruin his reputation. And plus that this was 18 years ago. Times were different. Maybe these days, no player would do it.

Miami has 'Dream Team' Fever

Well, the biggest news in Basketball is Dwayne Wade, Lebron James and the other guy staying/joining Miami Heat and now being branded as the 'Dream Team.' So Miami won't shut up about it. My dad is excited. It's all over the local news. It all started with the fear that Dwayne Wade was going to leave the Miami Heat and everyone wanted him to stay. Even the Mascot Bernie camped outside of the America Airlines Arena (Triple A) to make Wade stay. And then his friend joined and last night was the big announcement from Lebron James. On the Daily Show, Julianne Moore and John Stewart expressed they wanted Lebron for New York. John even made a joke about Lebron's announcement, saying he might say he's on Team Jacob or is a woman. In the end, Lebron chose the Heat, mainly because he's friend Dwayne is on the team. Now all Miamians are expecting Heat to go to the top now and are unstoppable.

Will Get What's Coming to him

Anthony Defalle, 20 (above), found Raymond Barkey, 59, dead in his Dania Beach apartment and instead of notifying authorities, he and two others walk around the corpse to steal his truck, guns and other property. He has been caught but the other two and the truck have yet to be retrieved. He is definitely getting what is coming to him, because he is a looker and you know what happens in jail.

Gloria Estefan on the D-List......... with Kathy Griffin

I live in Miami and Gloria Estefan is on the Z list. Z for Zuban, as in Cuban. She owns a hotel and restaurants, but she hasn't done anything in years. For us here in Miami, she is like on the 'who-cares?' list. But Cubans love her, so yeah she's A-list in Cuba-landia. But what do gringos who watch Kathy Griffin know about her? Anyhoo, she was gracious to Kathy. And Seeing Rosie and Gloria was funny. Gloria was offering flan to Rosie and she said it tasted like mucus. I agree that flan is a required taste. Flan is the only dessert offered at most Latino restaurants that are not franchises. Anyhoo, to clarify.. that in Miami Beach, there is no gay street. It depends on the week, if it is a White Party, yeah. But then that same street.. if it is a hip-hop thingy, it's all Black. Kathy and Rosie are not known by Cubans or Latinos, period. Well Miamians know Rosie as 'la Lesbiana.' Baca Frita, what Rosie ate was Fried Cow--it's good, and what Kathy ate was Ox Tail... Flaming Tail---I don't like.

Miami Social Bullshit

Call me bitter. But I gotta complain. My dad wants me to not say anything because of tourism. He thinks these shows are made to help Miami's economy. But I hate all this shit on saying Miami Beach is "Miami." Miami Beach is a city attached by bridges, what people who know Ocean Drive. Remember the Birdcage movie? Well, that's in Miami Beach. it is not the real Miami. I have no problem with Kathy Griffin going to Miami and staying mostly at Star Island and Ocean, but I hate this whole superficial image of Miami Beach. And how old are these people? 40? And still partying? Take easy. Go to bed at midnight. I hate all these 'they run this' shit. Um... you know who runs Miami? Cubans. All together. All of them. Yeah. And they speak a whole lot more Spanish than they show on TV.

Florida Power Outage

Okay, here is my take. Around 1:15pm or so, there was and still going on, a huge power outage throughout the state of Florida. I, as a resident, was taking a shower and the water went narrow and thought my parents were using too much water. When I went out of the shower, I had electricity and thought everything was okay. Then I found out the electricity went out at my house but for only a minute or so. We thought it was only us, until my aunt call to tell us the electricity was out in Miami, that scared me. That a lot of the traffic lights were out. We turn on the television, thinking it wouldn't have the news but to our surprise, it is a big scare. Miami-Dade public school told parents to not pick up their kids and chill, because if all the cars went off to the schools and the school buses went into traffic, there would be more chaos. They recently announced that they could pick up their kids at 4pm.

FPL (Florida Power and Light) hasn't released an official statement on the reason for this outage, but it is believed that 5 out of 8 Nuclear Power Plants at Turkey Point in Homestead, Florida went out. 2 went back online but 3 are still out. It is also rumored that they tried shutting down 1 plant and that's how this started. It even surprised me more that not only the local television channels were covering this, but also CNN, Headlines News and MSNBC. They urge people to stay home unless it is important.

The News is Out

Well four months ago, I was vague about this, now I can be open about this. The Yes Institute I volunteer for strives to prevent teen suicide and stop bullying in schools. 80% of male students that are harassed for being gay, identify as heterosexual. Tim Hardaway has been going to the institute to learn more. "I was scared out of my ... mind,'' Hardaway said of his first visit. "I didn't know how they were going to act toward me. But you know what? They welcomed me with open arms. That eased a lot of my nervousness.'' Martha Fugate, director and founder wrote a letter for the media, "Thanks to his honest albeit misguided reaction, Tim did find his way to YES Institute and the education he got was not just about others, but about himself."

A blogger on ESPN wrote: I'm a big believer that if you have a problem with a whole big group of people, don't huddle in your basement thinking nasty thoughts about these theoretical people. Get out there and talk to real people. Put a face on it. Learn about each other. Be honest as appropriate and be a good listener.

What we strive for 'putting a face' on the issue or issues. So that's good he sees that.

Tim Hardaway said, "I have taken steps and I'm happy that I did,'' Hardaway said. "If I didn't, I'd still be naive about it, ignorant about the whole thing. But I can talk about it now. I'm a polite person. That's how I am.'' Also: "I just wanted to go in and get educated, that's all. Get educated on what I said and why I said those things. I'm working on understanding it now. I'm not really trying to make amends. I've been there trying to get help."

I think if people find out more about the Yes Institute the better.

Miami Orange Bowl: Last year to enjoy?

The Miami Orange Bowl, that is about a mile from my house, is a legendary stadium that hosted the Super Bowl II, III, V, X, and XIII. By today's standards, it is tiny It used to host the Miami Dolphins, until 1987, now the Dolphin (former Joe Robbie) Stadium. [By the by, it was also known as the Pro Player Stadium for a while] The University of Miami, that was the tenants to the stadium, have now announced they will be leaving this year and Dolphin Stadium will host them for the 2007-2008 season. UM wanted the stadium to expand for their needs but that would have cost the taxpayers an arm and a leg, so they decided to go to the other stadium instead. Now, the previously dead mumblings about Florida Marlins wanting their own stadium is back.

Even though my alma matter Florida International University (FIU) is temporarily being hosted there, the Marlins are laying eyes on the area to make a new stadium with a 'retractable roof.' The Marlins have failed to bring up the money and the taxpayers have refused to pay to make a whole new stadium. But there seems to be more a positive response to the Marlins taking the spot. Except of course from the Orange Bowl fans. I always felt the stadium to be a bit cramped and the traffic is murder when there is a game. I think it is too small of an area to have the Marlins there. In the area where the Dolphin Stadium, there is plenty of space for heavy traffic and mad drivers but, where the Orange Bowl is... it is a heavy residential and metropolitan area. The main avenue next to it is 17 avenue and the bridge is under repairs that may not be done in a year, of course this whole stadium thing may take a couple of years but still... I don't think it bodes well.

Athlete declines communication workshop

A certain athlete who made remarks that were widely categorized as homophobic visited a non-profit GLBT (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Trangender) organization in Miami a few months ago. This specific organization centers around communication and being authentic, not concentrating on 'us versus them.' The organization's leader asked the individual to come to a two-day workshop concentrating on communication this weekend. This individual's rep called and said the individual would like to speak to the workshop's audience (saying how much the individual has changed)--which wasn't exactly part of the workshop. Not only did they want this, they wanted the workshop to be moved to another day, and to just be one day. The organization's leader did not budge, said it could not be done. Then the rep wanted the leader to tell the local newspaper that the individual was great and attended the event. The organization believed if the individual did not attended this crucial and life-changing workshop, this requested public comment would just fuel the fire if the individual did not have the proper tools to deal with criticism, similar to the one the individual was accused of in the first place. This individual did not attend the event. So right now, it is all in a stand still.

Jeffrey Donovan's Burn Notice Shooting at my neighborhood!!!

Never did I imagine any American English-speaking television show would shoot in my neighborhood. This morning I saw a bunch of trucks parked in this spooky area that was abandoned--pictured below. It used to be a children's nursery but was closed down and then collapsed and now homeless people live there. Anyhoo, they were blocking off a lot of areas and the cars couldn't get through. I went down there and asked what they were filming--as soon as they told me "Burn Notice" it made sense. Because the show is set in Miami.

Here from Google Maps, the area a few months ago. I am glad they picked us (Allapattah--not even other Miami residents know where it is), this is the real Miami--not Miami Beach. So, I went to where they were filming in a local dollar store and an AD (I suppose) told me to be in their way. The dollar store always smells but when I passed by the open window and saw Jeffrey Donnovan delivering a monologue, it smell so much better--like a breath of fresh air. It is scorching hot and it is crowded in the store, so I went my merry way. I heard they have been shooting since Monday and will be finishing up tomorrow. I will definitely be snopping for more info or an autograph.

Unfortunately I couldn't take any pictures of him, took one as I was passing by, also there is not much to take pictures of. This is the place they were shooting in-- La Auxiladora Dollar Store.

Twentysomethings: Over the Rainbow

This is by no means a memorial or think of it as something died, this is celebrate and to have in acknowledgment. This is for a youth group of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender individuals that have laughed, shared and cried together for five years. Every ending has a beginning and I'm happy I was part of it. I got this cake and we had fun. Most youth groups I've been part of (Catholic ones, two), I have quit. This is the first one that I've seen to the end. Funny because I was at the beginning of the other ones and not this one. But for Kevin and everyone else, it's been fun.

Calle Ocho and the Heat

The Miami Heat won tonight (woo-hoo!) and today was also Calle Ocho, a big festival they have on Southwest Eight Street and around it, there is an area called 'Little Havana' which is made up of mostly Cubans. Check a little bit more about it on the wikipedia page.

Nick Turnbull returns to Miami just after signing wih the Bears

Nick Turnbull is a football player that was the perspective leader of the Florida International University Football team that began in 2002. In 2006 he was drafted to the Atlanta Falcons as a free agent and recently was 'claimed off of waivers' (whatever that means) by the Chicago Bears on December 12, 2006. Ironically, the Chicago Bears are playing at the Super Bowl in Miami, near his hometown. (He was born in Miramar and the Dolphin Stadium is not technically in Miami but nearby.)

I don't know for sure if he will be playing in the Super Bowl, probably not. I went to the FIU as well, I think I graduated before he did. All the girls would swoon over him. He would hang around the main building where I worked. I remember he used to smile a lot and had a good demeanor most of time. I managed to gather some. Especially of his piercing eyes.

I don't think he has played yet for the Bears (he has joined the team at the tail end) but he is on a lot of webpages as part of the Bears team.

You can see his eyes popping out there, he is the one to the right.

Nip/Tuck's Miami not accurate at all

I don't know if Nip/Tuck films in Miami or not, but of course it protrays Miami Beach more than anything but it is not accurate to Miami at all. Miami has a lot of streets that are undergoing construction, lots of new buildings half produced, and broken old streets everywhere. Also, Hispanics, lots of hispanics and Cubans more than anything. Who are absent from Nip/Tuck. Rosie O' Donnell's earjacking, the street there looked like Miami Beach but who stole her ear were white. There is more white people in Nip/Tuck than there really are in Miami. Nip/Tuck has been on for four years, I forget it is even suppose to be Miami.

There are a lot of houses with wood which is not common in Miami. The only accurate-looking thing is the doctor's parking garage. That one really does look like a usual Miami parking garage.

Someone wants attention on Spanish Reality Shows

There are two local Latino channels where I noticed one guy has applied for 'reality shows'. On the new hit Desafio 20.06 on GENTV (which is like 'Survivor'), there is a Venezuelan guy called Daniel Mucerino from Fort Lauderdale and is a waiter. He acts sort of feminine, paints his Chihuahua's nails, and cried in the last episode because his team lost a challenge. Then I realized he also auditioned for MegaTV's 'Mega Modelo' where they picked 12 finalists to finally have one Model for their station. He did not make it to the finalists, his picture below.

No offense to Daniel, if he is reading this--eek, but I did think he was gay. He sure is handsome and has a great body but thats not why. To my surprise, on his short profile on the GenTV site, it says his wife lives in Orlando. Maybe he just acts that way, I don't want to judge. Obviously if you read this blog, you know I am a gay man and I didn't like being judged. As for him being on both channels, more of him is no problem for me. Bueno, duh!, el tiene mi atencion ahora.

FIU vs UM

Everybody is talking about this. I am not surprised but I'm glad they fought, we have a lot of rivalry. Some FIU students say that some of the people who caused it are slimy, scum, etc. But I don't think it's about ethncity, they are all mixed ethncities. It is just rivals and meatheads. It is both of them.

Maria Elvira Salazar filmed a 'Castro is dead' program just in case

Local Miami reporter Maria Elvira Salazar (pictured above right fixing her hair) along with Castro's sister last week in a special 'Polos Opuestos' program on Mega TV. On Friday, she filmed another special show just in case Fidel Castro really was dead to air on the weekend. It never aired of course but I just thought it would be interesting to mention. Who knows? It might be used if he indeed is dead. Her show translated means 'Opposing Sides,' filmed in an auditorium in front of my old alma mater FIU.
