The Princess and the Price

There is great article written by Peggy Orenstein, a mother who her daughter asked her 'What's wrong with Cinderella?' That when Disney was failing, a marketer noticed a demand for Disney Princess products. He saw girls dressing in dresses and Disney never really advertised their products. Now it is the number 1 selling product for Disney. Now, little girls everywhere dress as little Belles and Snow Whites whenever they want. Is this a good thing? Little girls being taught that they must be pretty all the time and all their needs must be met? I believe spoiled girls are going to be spoiled no matter what and tomboys as well. When my 18-year old niece was a little girl, she wanted to be a 'pretty princess' and loved Belle and wanted everything pink. She never dressed in the dresses, mainly because they weren't available. Her family was sort of middle class, barely, so she didn't get everything she wanted but she still grew up spoiled. In another case, my youngest niece at 2 doesn't like the princess stuff and is a tomboy but she does like Dora and the Little Mermaid.

One of my close friends and I love the movie The Little Mermaid and think back of those days we used to see it and talk about fun scenes. Now, why do Disney movies still effect us all even if we don't want to admit it? We hate all this business and Eisner stuff, and resent the huge Disney corporation but we can't help loving the movies. I believe in separating the movies from the chaos. Forget the manipulation, statistics, etc. They definitely have magic. Maybe its our nostalgia. Anyhoo, back to the girls. Boys have their superheroes (Spider-man, Superman, Batman, Power Rangers, Fantastic Four, etc.) and girls have what we have in our mind as docile spoiled smiling placesetters, but kids have strong imagination. I remember seeing my other little niece running around in her snow white costume like superman, kicking and 'flying' around with the cape. So does it really matter? I am one of t he few who think pink is a wonderful color and love seeing those pink products.

As a little gay boy, I felt uncomfortable walking through the pink Barbie aisle--that someone would spot my giddyness and tell me to get out or ask why I was there. But today walking through the girls aisle, I still felt uncomfortable. I am openly gay, shouldn't I be comfortable in my sexuality? Maybe because it brought up insecurities when I was little or maybe felt silly when I am an adult. Well, when I walk through the boys aisle, I feel fine. I am sure lots of men my age feel fine walking through it to. As a teenager, I did feel a bit embarrassed walking through the kids isle but I am now more at ease. It probably still is not socially acceptable for twenty-somethings that like comic books and superheroes. Like last time I mentioned the new black princess, since then the movie's title has been changed from Frog Princess to The Princess and The Frog and Maddy's name has changed to Tiana. The bottom line is I think the girl products are nice and all, except for Bratz and those My Scene dolls but they do need products that reflect sport-loving girls.

Comedy Central: Stick to a show!

What is up with all these Comedy Central shows "Halfway Home," "Dog Bites Man," and now "American Body Shop" that suddenly show up and then disappear. I understand Comedy Central have these short-lived shows like the game show "Distraction" and "Life with Busey." Some that out live their charm and there just isn't more to do with. But with the improv sitcoms mentioned before, are they looking for the next "Reno 911"? Can they just stick with it? "Halfway Home" was halfway decent, I hope it comes back. A show I hope never gets canned is "Showbiz ShowWith David Spade," which just completed its third season. Some other shows I think we have no chance seeing again like "Freak Show."

Declan and Kyle: When Subtext becomes text?

Well when there is a popular show there is always crazy theories about characters being gay: "Friends" Chandler and Joey, Buffy and Faith, and "Xena: Warrior Princess" (Should I say more?) Even I am buying into this now with that Declan and Kyle may be a secret gay couple. This use to be used back when when gay people weren't visible, subtext and not blatantly saying it. Now fans are believing the same as well. It doesn't help that Declan is done up like a pretty doll, reminds me of Alvin and the Chimpmunks, how they draw them lately. Blonde hair and big doll blue eyes.

~~~~~SPOILERS~~~
Okay here is the spoiler that I have been trying to avoid but I guess it is going to inevitable. This picture from TV.com and Jessi XX's profile from the official website circles rumors. So yes, signs points to Declan and Jessi hooking up.
Balefully Livejournal
Czeri puts a wonderful twist on things. Saying gay with Kyle is good and straight with Jessi is evil.
I would agree that an relationship with Jessi make take Declan to the dark side but I think it is to make Kyle jealous on Jessi's side, because she is with his 'best friend' and Declan gets closer to the mystery that is Kyle. Or maybe just date a female Kyle. Ooh, more subtext! So if the subtext is Declan is gay, then him dating the female version of Kyle, then that adds more subtext. Interesting. In my own opinion, I do not believe they are going to go out and say that Declan is gay. Now if it isn't suppose to be gay subtext, we are probably just seeing too much into this and I am just wishfully thinking.
I'm melting! Nathan FIllion may join Desperate Housewives!
Where Desperate Housewives is losing its sheen, this will pump it right up for me.
Nathan Fillion ('Firefly'/Serenity, Waitress, 'Two Guys and a Girl") is in talks to be a Wisteria Lane resident. I hope his character is as witty and charming as he is. Lucky "Drive" was canceled but anyone could tell you that. He will play husband to Dana Delany (who is 15 years his senior in real life), Lyndy Fonseca plays the daughter. The point is that Dana's character that has a much younger husband. Nathan as a boy-toy husband? Yummy.
Buffy Season 8 Comic Spoiler Interviews
The cast of Buffy the Vampire Slayer didn't even know that Joss Whedon was making a comic of Season 8, and I am sure many still don't know. It is already at Issue 4 and a lot has happened. I grouped together really informative interviews on the books. You can order the re-issues and pre-order upcoming issues here at TFAW.com. If you have read the issues already, these aren't really spoilers. I am going into plot specifics because you just gotta go out and buy it! No news on agraphic novel yet but a compilation of the first four will be out in November but who can wait that long?
MTV News
Basic stuff on the comicComic Resources
In this interview Joss Whedon talks about after issue 4.
iF Magazine
Interviews Scott Allie, the editor that has been around the beginning of the Buffy comic itself.
The A.V. Club
Joss is frank about Season Six of Angel in comic book form and still stands by on how the final episode ended.
He puts it well, "But calling it Season Eight isn’t what makes this special. It’s that it is the continuation of the show by the guy who created it, the guy who deserves the credit for the success of the show, who’s as involved in this “season” as he was in the best seasons of the TV Series."
A loving review on the first four issues
And Buffy might not be the only one coming back in full official canon status in the comic world. More here as well.
